“There is an unfair bias against Xhosa rappers” – Yanga Chief

“There is an unfair bias against Xhosa rappers” – Yanga Chief. Being a rapper comes with a number of challenges, Yanga has expressed his which involve being a Xhosa rapper.

Succeeding as a hip hop musician who thrives on using his home language in South Africa isn’t easy. But the likes of Yanga, Duncan, Tuks have been proof that vernacular rap carries equal weight as English rap if not more.

Award winning rapper Yanga Chief feels even in the acceptance and acknowledgement of vernacular rap, music distributors have made it clear that they have something against Xhosa rappers.

“Just by looking at the mainstream Xhosa rappers, I’ve always felt that there was an unfair bias against Xhosa rappers. Like Motswako has its shine, Soweto rap did its thing, even Durban had its moment – and when you talk about Eastern Cape, it’s like [only] this artist and this artist – that’s it!” he said In an interview with SlikourOnLife.

uTatakho hitmaker said it took a long time for people to catch on to his vibe as an artist pushing Xhosa rap. Either way he pushed it and is now winning.

Yanga has a new album out Becoming A Pop Star available for purchase on all music digital stores.
