How SA Rappers Reacted To Bob Mabena’s Death. South Africa has lost another legend, renowned radio personality Bob Mabena. The 51 year-old suffered a cardiac arrest.

Power FM, Rob’s home radio after hopping from Metro FM and Kaya FM released an official statement confirming his passing.

β€œIt is with deep grief and pain that we announce that Power 98.7 breakfast host Mr Bob Mabena passed away this afternoon from cardiac arrest,” Power FM 98.7’s management said in a statement.

On an interview with TshisaLIVE in 2018 Mabena revealed a lot of details abput his life story, from growing up hating his father, his love affairs and how exactly he got into radio.

Mabena has presented Kaya FM’s weekday breakfast show since 2011, this was after Radio Bob and Bob TV in 1988, doing the breakfast and afternoon slots, and presenting a music show.

In 1992, he took over the national drive slots at Metro FM. Apart from releasing five music albums and winning rap artist of the year in the late ’90s, Mabena’s behind-the-scenes track record includes various business stints, ranging from marketing positions at major broadcasting houses to running his communications agency.

“I went to township schools in Atteridgeville, Pretoria. I grew up listening to the accents of other kids in my area and how smooth they were in English. I knew this was one language I wanted to perfect.

I modelled my Radio Bop countdown on Casey Kasem, who did the American Top 40. That’s how I got noticed, and I was recruited by Radio Metro.”

He leaves behind three children.
