Nota Baloyi praises Kwesta’s success for his album DaKar II
Nota praises former colleague Kwesta’s success in Podcast Interview. Former artist manager and rapper Nota Baloyi always has something on his mind when it comes to South African hip-hop positive or negative, Nota certainly speaks his mind fears nothing and no one.
He recently trended for his opinions of rappers and the industry on the annual MTV Base countdown ‘Base Hottest MCs’ in 2020. In one of his statements he says that he felt that vocalist Kamo Mphela has had more impact in 2020 than Nalakatha rapper Costa Titch.
The opinioned RISA executive appeared on ‘The Sobering Podcast’s first episode of their fifth season. He spoke on a variety of topics but what stood out was the praise he gave Kwesta who he previously managed. He began by speaking about RCA Records who were interested in South Africa’s biggest hip-hop artist. “The big act, the bestselling hip-hop act who is at the imprint of RCA via the label that I’m the head of is Kwesta.”
Meaning that Spirit rapper Kwesta is the bestselling hip-hop act at Sony Music in South Africa. Nota continued by saying “He’s selling better than AKA within Sony, AKA didn’t do “DaKAR II” numbers. It took years for levels to reach 300k…” Nota claimed. He uses ‘The Sobering Podcast’s’ platform to highlight that AKA’s Levels never actually went Diamond.
He commented about the matter saying, “You know, it’s not yet Diamond. Yes it sold 300 000 copies but because when the album was released in 2014, Platinum was 40 000 not 30 000 and therefore it needs to get to 400 000 copies sold to reach actually Diamond”.
Kwetsa’a sophomore album DaKAR II was released in February 2016 and in 2019 the album was certified Diamond by the RISA. DaKar II included the smash hits Ngud featuring Cassper Nyovest, Ngiyaz’fela Ngawe featuring Thabsie and Mayibabo featuring DJ Maphorisa, DJ Buckz and OkMalumkoolkat.
