Cassper Nyovest: “Jabba Didn’t Put Me On”
Cassper Nyovest: “Jabba Didn’t Put Me On”. Cassper is one of South Africa’s top rappers and has had had a significant rise to the top. The multi award winning rapper has achieved more than most rappers in the country and is constantly looking to break boundaries and work even harder to be the best.
The Nokuthula rapper recently joined Pearl Thusi for an interview on BET Africa’s ‘Behind The Story’. The two spoke about Cassper’s rise and growth in the entertainment industry and his fellow industry mates amongst other things. Pearl specifically asked Cassper when he looks back at his come up and coming to Joburg to chase his dream versus seeing something like #OpenUpTheIndustry trending, what comes to mind for him.
Cassper explained that nobody put him on he was helped, specifically by OG rapper HHP. He continues to say that no one wanted to help him and HHP took a chance on him.
“He gave me a little bit, he said here… try this. He spoke positively about me to someone when I wasn’t there and he put me next to him which made people think, hmm… maybe I need to give this guy a listen a little bit. He helped me, but he didn’t put me on. He didn’t say, I’m getting out so that you can get in. But when we were coming up, things were different, the instant gratification of social media wasn’t as prominent as it is right now.“
“When I was coming up, viral didn’t exist. Viral really meant people know you for real in the streets and people know your song for real that was viral.” Cassper explained.
He continued to say that the attitude with #OpenUpTheIndustry is different with different industries and in music specifically he can’t tell people to listen to a specific artist because people listen to who they want to listen too.
