Could Amapiano Be The New SA Hip Hop Of Local Music? Amapiano has taken South Africa by storm and has become one of the leading genres to listen to in the country. The genre has grown so big that it is finally being recognized at the SAMAs as its own genre alongside Gqom. The genre also has a new home and platform where you can read more about what South Africa’s top amapiano artists are up too.
‘The Yanos’ is a new platform that solely focuses on giving fans an inside look of what’s happening in the genre, from music releases, diving inside the artists lives and even exploring some Hip Hop artists that made the switch over to amapiano and have become successful in the genre.
A group that has proven that amapiano is their area of expertise is Major League DJz. The brothers have won over the hearts of South Africans with their Amapiano Live Balcony Mixes. Major League uses their live balcony mixes to introduce amapiano fans to new sounds and allow other amapiano artists to introduce their style of the genre to fans. They DJz have had the biggest songs in the country and are proving time and time again that they are the best at what they do.
Another SA rapper who has been successful in the genre is award winning rapper Focalistic. The Pretoria native’s exploration in the genre has even welcomed the interests of International eyes. After the major success of his hit tack Ke Star, he went on to make a remix of the song with Nigerian superstar Davido that found itself on the Billboard charts and had Grammy winning singer, songwriter Alica Keys jamming to their collaboration.
Family Tree CEO Cassper Nyovest is also a rapper who’s voice has been prominent in the genre. He has appeared on a few amapiano hits including Kabza de Small’s Sponono and DJ Sumbody’s Monate Mpolaye. Cassper has already said that in 2021 he plans to explore more of the genre and has already dropped his first single Ama Number Ayi‘ 10 featuring Abidoza, Kammu Dee and LuuDaDeeDay.
