Sol Phenduka Quesions If Certain SA Hip Hop Hits Would Exist Had It Not Been For AKA’s Sampling Methods
Sol Phenduka Questions If Certain SA Hip Hop Hits Would Exist Had It Not Been For AKA’s Sampling Methods. DJ and Podcaster Sol Phenduka has always gotten people thinking about certain things about the South African Entertainment industry. Through his tweets and the Podcast And Chill platform, he always sheds light on various issues.
Sol recently took to his twitter page to pose an intriguing question to fans of SA Hip Hop. He asked if certain songs would exist if AKA had not made a success of sampling certain house songs for his music because other SA artists followed similar methods for their own music. He named Kwesta’s Spirit and Ngud’ specifically.
“If AKA Didn’t make a success of sampling old house songs to hip hop would we have Ngud’, Spirit etc. Cos they all followed the same pattern. Different sound, same methodology” Sol wrote.
A tweep challenged Sol’s question by saying that sampling in the SA Hip Hop industry has been happening even before AKA had departed from his rap group IV League. Sol responded writing that the tweep should reread his tweet because he is talking specifically about sampling house songs.
“Please read. I’m talking about sampling HOUSE SONGS. Nyambz, Battle Kat, omen, draztik, Amu and all them cats weren’t sampling house music to make hip hop and if they did, they weren’t making hits from those house samples.” Sol wrote.
Other tweeps had mixed reactions about Sol Phenduka’s opinion on the matter with some agreeing with him, and others saying that he left out other SA Hip Hop stars.
One tweep commented on the tweet saying that AKA’s sound was more funk Kwaito that just Hip Hop.
Another tweep pointed out that Kwesta’s style of rap changed after K.O had make his hit Caracara.
