AKA Gives #TheBraaiShowWithCass The GreenLight, But Legal Battle Not Over. The Braai Show with Cassper Nyovest will air on its scheduled date on public broadcaster channel SABC but the legal matter between the involved parties is not over. Rapper AKA and Makhuducom Media and Cake Media have decided to settle the matter out of court, following the production companies request to the show’s former host AKA.

AKA, in a bid to halt the second season of the show from airing, had filed an urgent interdict at the Johannesburg High Court but withdrew the application to try to find an amicable resolution, this is according to a report by City Press. The report alleges that parties were unable to resolve the matter amicable during negotiations. A source told City Press that, negotiations fell after AKA’s demands were not meet. The rapper is alleged to have wanted a R5 million settlement.

AKA’s management company, The T Effect in a statement to City Press confirmed that a deal had not been made. “The negotiations collapsed as Forbes’ demands were not met. To the extent that Forbes’ ownership and entitlements remain fully intact, the airing of the show will continue as he proceeds to enforce his rights through the prescribed channels,” read the statement.

AKA approached the courts after all out of court solutions had been exhausted and parties involved were unable to reach a settlement. In his court application, AKA said the debacle was caused by him taking a sabbatical from his work commitments following the passing of his fiancee. In February AKA, the SABC and both production companies were in talks for a second season to be hosted and produced by the rapper.

The court papers in part read “What then happened during July 2021, and without my knowledge, was that the third respondent [Cake Media] – notwithstanding my desire to take personal time off on account of the personal tragedy that befell me in April 2021, and (I assume) alongside the first respondent [the SABC] as the distributor of The Braai Show – approached various persons, including a musician named Refiloe Phoolo (popularly known as Cassper Nyovest) and they agreed that he would take over as host of the show.

Despite negotiations falling through AKA in his statement to the publication does encourage South Africans to watch The Braai Show. “Forbes and his management encourage all South Africans to watch and support the show which he co-created, as its success will be of great benefit to him financially and otherwise.” The SABC will air the show on September 8 and has already begun the rollout of the show’s TV commercial.
