AKA On What He Feels Fuels The SA Hip Hop Vs Amapiano War
AKA On What He Feels Fuels The SA Hip Hop Vs Amapiano War. The SA Hip Hop versus amapiano war is ongoing and seems to really have no end. Different views have been aired by various individuals on both sides of the table. Amapiano is currently dominating the airwaves and the charts in South Ah fueling the debate even more. Rapper AKA is one of South Ah’s long-running Hip Hop artists, he has been in the game for several years has been able to witness several moments take place. AKA has witnessed SA Hip Hop go up against various SA genres and still continue to be around.
AKA is currently promoting his joint EP with Costa Titch, You’re Welcome. The two SA Hip Hop artists recently were interviewed on the podcast, Life With Lebang and spoke their music and also weighed in on the ongoing conversation regarding the state of SA Hip Hop. Lebang asked AKA and Costa Titch what are their thoughts on “SA Hip Hop is dead”. Lebang noted that the conversation is not new as she has seen the genre being compared to other genres such as Kwaito and Gqom. AKA has been a tad vocal on the matter and while he notes the current success of amapiano music, he is loyal to SA Hip Hop. “How can Hip Hop be dead if everybody is like dressed like Hip Hop like I don’t get it,” remarked Supa Mega.
“If you look at amapiano, they having their moment but if somebody walks into the room, somebody whose like a successful amapiano DJ and you didn’t know them from a bar of soap, you’d probably think they’re a rapper,” shared AKA. The rapper went on to speak on the influences SA Hip Hop has on other genres. “It’s South African music and music influences each other. I just think that thing comes from like a Twitter trolling thing, it’s actually a Twitter thing cause I don’t see it anywhere,” added AKA. Costa Titch explained that he is not a fan of the conversation in general and remarked that hearing the words SA Hip Hop and dead in the same sentences actually pushes him to work harder.
AKA previously weighed in on the ongoing amapiano versus SA Hip Hop debate in a previous interview with Zkhiphani. The rapper in a clip seen on social media reminded critics that SA Hip Hop has been around for over a decade and expressed doubts over amapiano’s longevity. “Amapiano is South African music so it’s okay but at the end of the day hip hop has been here for like 20 years. Piano you can have one, let’s see if you here at year 10,” said AKA. While the rapper may have doubts over Amapiano’s survival, he has indicated that he would create an Amapiano song if the right beat came along.
