Rashid Kay Explains Why Touchline Truth Was Not Nominated For Lyricist Of The Year At SAHHA 2022
Rashid Kay Explains Why Touchline Truth Was Not Nominated For Lyricist Of The Year At SAHHA 2022. The South African Hip Hop culture does not rely just on emceeing; rather, rappers’ pen game has been considered, with the Lyricist Award thrust into the spotlight.
Last year’s SA Hip Hop Award Lyricist Of The Year was won by Priddy Ugly, but before that, the nominations category raised eyebrows. This came after Tembisa-born rapper Touchline Truth was not nominated considering the powerful penmanship that he flexed in his project S.O.O.N 2.
Rashid Kay addressed why Touchline was not nominated for Lyricist Of The Year at last year’s SAHHA during a guest spot on Choppin’ It With Bhuda T Podcast. “He’s a dope lyricist, probably who’s number six and we wanted five lyricists,” Rashid said.
Breaking down the list of rappers who were nominated for the Lyricist Of The Year category, Rashid Kay said; “we had Ginger, we had Priddy Ugly, we had PdotO, we had Landmarq.” The SA Hip-hop Awards organiser went on to explain the criteria that are used to nominate artists for the Lyricst Of The Year Award.
“Lyricist Of The Year doesn’t look at anything else, but Lyrics, your pen game, your poetic element,” Rashid said. “You could be having ten followers, if you’re going crazy with the pen game you’re Lyricist Of The Year. That’s one category that all these popular n**gas have never been nominated for. We’ve never had Cassper as Lyricst Of The Year, we’ve never had Supa Mega as Lyricist. It’s not about popularity. That’s how Touchline lost out.” he added.
