Makwa Slams Debate Over Best MCs In SA Hip Hop

The debate over the best MCs in South African Hip-hop has been a longstanding one, with fans often passionately advocating for their favourite artists. However, Makwa believes that this competition only serves to create unnecessary tension and rivalry among artists who should be working together to elevate the local hip-hop scene.

Taking to Twitter (X), the renowned producer asserted that ongoing discussions about the supremacy of MCs could be detrimental to the vitality of South African Hip Hop. He further explained that Amapiano’s success is attributed to the unity among its artists, emphasizing how they collaborate and leverage each other’s strengths instead of fostering unnecessary competition.

“Lento Yama best Mc iyo ebulala iHipHop yase South Africa 🤞🏽Piano artists will forever win because awekho la masimba ku piano.” said Makwa.

In response to Makwa’s comments, DJ Zan-D upheld the significance of discussions about the best MCs in South African Hip Hop. He argued that such debates are essential, given that Hip Hop thrives on competition, evident in rap battles and dance competitions. “To be honest njayam, Hip Hop has always been about being the best. That’s why you have battle rap Dj Competions Dance competions etc.” Said DJ Zan-D.

Nevertheless, in the Ukhamba album documentary, Sjava addressed the superfluous competition associated with debates on the best MCs in South African Hip Hop. The Umama hitmaker advocated for music that transcends such rivalry—a genre that embraces themes of love and peace, catering to a broader audience.

“We must have to create music, something soft, elderly friendly, family music, something that you can play for your parents. No swearing, or violence, it should be about love and motivation, something enjoyable. And for us to get those results we have to be in sync. It’s not about who’s better than the other,” Sjava said.
