The renowned DJ has predominantly aligned her brand with South African Hip Hop but surprised many of her fans by embracing the Gqom sound after joining Warner Music Africa. Speaking during an interview on YFM, the famed DJ said that her decision to tap into Gqom was because Hip Hop has not been making much noise and she was not inspired by the Hip Hop music that has been released worldwide.

“Hip Hop just took like a little bit of a deep, internationally not even just in South Africa. The world was giving us some other kind of Hip Hop and I wasn’t inspired to do that anymore,Ms Cosmo said. In her quest for musical inspiration, the Connect hitmaker explained that she chose to delve into the music that connects with her soul and Gqom was the right sound.

“I was like okay, let me look back at home and see what else is inspiring me, what else do I love, where else do I connect, and Gqom has always been something for me,” she said.

With all the music that has been dropping in the Hip Hop space worldwide, Ms Cosmo believes that artists have been releasing a lot of serious music and she saw it fitting to release something to cheer up the audience and have fun.

“I’m half Zulu, half Xhosa, so you know, so Eastern Cape here with its Gqom, Durban and its Gqom. So I was like you know what this actually speaks to who I am as a person and it fits so well with what I want to do, just to have fun. I also feel like people are making serious music, so here is something that I wanted to throw in and see how we fool around with it.” Cosmo said.

Eager to embark on an adventurous exploration of an uncharted musical genre, the acclaimed DJ declared her determination to challenge fellow artists. Fueled by this motivation, she joined forces with prominent figures like Blxckie, who, like her, was relatively unfamiliar with the Gqom sound, and Khamo Mphela, known for occasional forays into the genre.

“It was also to challenge everyone else in the song, Blxckie has never been on the Gqom song before. When I played him the beat he was like ‘eeh which one is this one’ and I was like just do it and he wrote the same time. Khamo also, because you know she does like a little bit of a Gqom session in her performances, so already knew she was gonna jump on and it’s gonna be fire.” Ms Cosmo explained.
