Raf Don Criticizes Centralization Of SA Hip Hop In Johannesburg. Johannesburg, renowned as the City of Gold, stands not just as a focal point but as the ultimate destination for countless South Africans aspiring to fulfil their dreams.
South African hip hop has experienced a surge of talented rappers hailing from various provinces, with numerous prominent figures emerging who aren’t native to Johannesburg. This widespread migration of rappers to Jozi suggests that, despite cities like Cape Town and Durban boasting their fair share of skilled artists, aspiring rappers perceive Johannesburg as the essential hub for success in the industry.
Nonetheless, Cape Town-based rapper Raf Don has voiced criticism of this trend, asserting that within the industry, there’s a prevailing notion that if the music or the artist doesn’t originate from Johannesburg, it doesn’t hold the same weight. “SA hiphop” in other words means if it’s not Joburg based it doesn’t count,” wrote Raf Don.
Youngsta CPT, hailing from Cape Town, has also voiced his discontent with the concentration of South African hip hop exclusively in Johannesburg. The rapper has been a big advocate of the success of rappers from Cape Town stating that the likes of DJ Ready D and Mr.Devious.
Taking to Twitter, one of the SA Hip Hop fans stated that YoungstaCPT doesn’t get enough appreciation. In response to the post, the rapper stated that most of the SA Hip Hop stories are centralised and documented in Joburg, so he is not given enough flowers and appreciation. “If JHB is the only region documenting SA Hip Hop then this will always be the outcome…” He said.
