In an exclusive interview with SA Hip Hop Mag, K.Keed unpacked the motivation behind the deluxe, shared insights on her creative process, and spoke on her role as a voice for young women in the South African hip-hop space.

K.Keed explained that the decision to release a deluxe edition, rather than a completely new project, was rooted in the personal nature of the album. She said that the story of Bite the Bullet is tied to self-reflection and facing adversities to reach where she is today.

“The destination isn’t always stagnant as we hope compared to the journey,” she said. “Allowing me to extend the world of Bite the Bullet only enhances the original story. I’ve always wanted to do a deluxe, so this was part of the plan from the start. With this deluxe it explores similar themes that align with the original album. I ambitiously wanted to see if I was capable of making it sound better without disturbing its true essence, but by elevating the additions.”

When asked how this new chapter reflects where she is mentally and musically, K.Keed described a turning point in her personal growth. She said walking through challenges builds resilience and shapes character.

“You learn things about yourself that you might like or don’t like,” she explained. “However, it is necessary for resilience, and that was one of the most important discoveries I learned about myself during this process.

“I’m a big fan of learning and unlearning, so through everything that I go through, I take it with a grain of salt. That has allowed me not to be overruled by emotion but to identify that emotions work hand in hand with reality, and the best form of channelling those emotions and experiences is through music. I want people to take note of the growth and experience when they listen, the subtle detail and intention behind every lyric and emotion.”

K.Keed shared that the deluxe is also a gift to her fans, who have supported her throughout a year of prolific output. “I honestly just wanted to give more to the fans. This deluxe is just the cherry on top of what I’ve already given them this year. I’ve never dropped so much music in one year in my whole career, so this is my opportunity to change that narrative. Plus, Bite the Bullet deserves its spotlight before jumping into a new project. It’s my debut, so it means the world to me.”

In addition, she spoke about how the deluxe introduces fresh energy through collaborations with a younger generation of producers. “This deluxe has an exciting feel and energy about it. I blended it really well with the original product. I found a way to synchronise the extension without interfering with the original feel.”

K.Keed also reflected on her musical identity and versatility. Hip-hop remains at her core, but she is unafraid to explore new sounds and experiment. “Hip-hop is home for me. I have an unconditional place for it in my heart. Trying new genres and experimenting may seem new to some, but for me, I’ve always had this version of me lingering in the back of my mind. I enjoy seeing my capabilities in fruition and challenging the norm. I’ll never abandon hip-hop, but I won’t ever let it box me either. I enjoy creating in all forms, and that’s always been a part of me.”

Transparency and authenticity are central to her creative philosophy. She explained, “It’s a core part of my creativity. Transparency brings soul into your art. It connects you to your fans and creates relatability. Personally, it has liberated me in a sense, which simultaneously liberated my fans. I have to stay true to what I believe is right for my art so that people can connect to it in my own unique way.”

Her experiences performing at dream stages have shaped her understanding of the craft. K.Keed emphasised the importance of preparation and respect for performance. “Coming from the hood, performing at my dream stages has truly shown me that this dream is possible. It has taught me the importance of entertaining the crowd and being present in the moment. It has taught a lot on the sound technicality side, but more importantly, it has taught me that as an artist, you must always respect the craft and take it seriously. If you want to be the best, you have to study the best to be the best. I recommend every artist invest in performances, no matter how big or small.”

On navigating criticism and understanding audiences, she said, “I’ve learned that music is consumed differently in different parts of the world and locally. Every demographic consumes music differently, so don’t be too offended if someone does not appreciate the art. Someone out there will, and when you find your people, they will support you unconditionally. Music is subjective, and so is criticism. Always look at the bigger picture and don’t let other people’s opinions suffocate your dreams.”

K.Keed also spoke on her role as a voice for young women in hip-hop and the message she hopes her music conveys. “I want my fans to understand that all my offerings are intentional and passion-driven. Being vulnerable and relatable makes the best art, so I encourage others not to hide behind who they are but to utilise that to tell the world who they are and show people what they’re made of. Most importantly, I want to inspire other women in the hip-hop industry to be themselves. If I can do it, then they can do it too. Make the art that you’ll be proud of in years to come — something timeless and meaningful that represents you and what you stand for.”
