JR Reveals The AKA Hit Song That Was Meant For Sjava. Music producer and rapper JR has previously worked with one of Mzansi hottest rapper’s AKA and during his interview with Mac G on Podcast and Mac G, he shared insight into how some of the award-winning rapper’s song has come about. During the interview, JR dropped a bombshell, that a hit song released by AKA was actually meant to go to another artist.
Mac G asked JR out of all the songs that he has written, co-written, which one is his favourite. The rapper wasn’t able to immediately answer the question as all his songs are like his baby. Mac G then chimed in and asked not even “Congratulate me” JR responded and said “Nha not even congratulate” the rapper then went on to give a backstory as to how AKA’s 2014 album Levels came about.
“Kiernan come to me he said, I had just done my album, ‘Cool Forever’, he came to me and said I want the exact same album, with an AKA name on it, so going into that I had already written songs of that nature from the previous album and he wanted to mix house and hip hop.” MacG then praised AKA’s hit song ‘Congratulate’ and asked JR if he did everything on the track, JR responds and says “no” he then goes on to reveal “it was a big collaborative effort”.
The rapper then went goes on to confirm that Yanga Chief has written for AKA, he does however correct MacG and says he shouldn’t say “wrote for” but instead say “wrote with”. JR praises AKA’s pen skills, saying that he is probably one of the top 3 of the guys, that he knows, who are great writers but he also explains that the songwriting process needs to be done with other individuals.
“The thing is he understands that he can’t get there alone, he needs other people to help him get there. For instance Mame, Yanga wrote the lyrics, I wrote the melodies and performed the melodies and that song was meant to go to Sjava. I sent the kulula, ndizokukhumbula Jacob Zuma, Thabo Mbeki joint and Sjava wanted to record and I think Kiernan was unavailable and just took my guide lyrics and put them as the final lyrics,” J.R said of the TMB single.
