“SA Hip-Hop Artists Let The Standard Drop,” 25K On Amapiano Taking Over

“SA Hip-Hop Artists Let The Standard Drop,” 25K On Amapiano Taking Over. Hip Hop culture in South Africa is constantly evolving, however, at the moment there is a lot of talk surrounding the genre in regards to it no longer being on top in the country and Amapiano taking over the airwaves. This statement is a debatable one and everyone from those in the industry and fans have their own views. Speaking to SA Hip Hop Magazine, rapper 25K shared his views on the current state of hip hop and the Yanos.

The ‘Pheli Makaveli’ hitmaker explains that it is unfair to compare, the two genres because of the different positions they are in. “Hip Hop is a culture, you have to understand amapiano is becoming a culture right now and it’s kind of unfair to compare the two. We know how the consumers in SA consume music, so us saying hip hop is dead is beyond like not acknowledging how hip hop is a culture.”

25K then share that when it comes to hip hop, one needs to look at the genre as a whole, as it is a global sound. “Like hip hop as a whole, that is a global culture that brings people together, that’s how you would relate to like a Drake and he is like a thousand miles away from you. The same way people connect with piano through the dance vibes, you could not really understand what they saying but like it just makes you move like that.”

One thing that is certain, the Attridgeville rapper, doesn’t feel like the hip hop genre is dead, however, he does feel that the standard of Mzansi hip hop has been dropped by artists. “I feel like a lot of SA hip hop artists, let the standard drop, in terms of the music that they have been putting out.”

25K goes on to explain that he is not an artist, who drops music for the sake of dropping music, he drops when it makes sense to him. “I believe I’m, not an artist who drops music because I feel like music needs to be dropped, for me to drop something it needs to make sense to me. So I feel like a lot of stuff out, right now -no disrespect or anything- but I feel like it’s just that thing of like you have to drop something, you putting it out there. I have a lot of songs on my album, that if I play for a person they fire but they don’t really make sense in terms of what I was trying to accomplish with the sound in my project.”
