Cassper Nyovest Accused Of Not Paying Royalties To Mahotella Queens For Hit Song. In 2015, Cassper Nyovest collaborated with the legendary group Mahotella Queens on the song Malome. Mahotella Queens even joined Cassper on stage at his iconic Global Citizen performance in 2018. One would have thought the collaboration was great on all ends but it is reportedly not as it seems.

Mahotella Queens producer Veli Shabangu has levelled some serious accusations against Cassper. Shabangu according to Sunday World has publicly accused the rapper of exploiting the group. Shabangu aired the allegations at Mahotella Queens member Nobesuthu Mbadu’s memorial service, where he accused the rapper of not sending condolences to the family. Mbadu passed away last week due to kidney failure at Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital in Vosloorus.

The producer during his address at the memorial service on Tuesday held at the Dumisani Masilela Theatre in Germiston accused Cassper of not paying royalties due to the group. Speaking to Sunday World after the memorial service, Shabangu expressed disappointment that Mbady died without getting the royalties due for the hit collaboration. Shabangu revealed to the publication that several attempts have been made to reach out to Cassper for him to pay what is due to the group.

“What is even painful and disrespectful is that he did not even send a word of condolences to the deceased family or other remaining members of the group. Not even on social media or any platform. The Mahotella Queens, who are internationally recognised and treated as royalty overseas, have gone through a lot here at home and have been exploited by these patriarchal males,” Shabangu told the publication.

Sunday World further reports that Shabangu said that failure from Cassper to do what is right would result in them taking the legal route. “I just hope it doesn’t get there. The same energy that he used back then when he wanted the song from them, he must use it to pay them their royalties. Why should they chase after him now?”

Cassper is currently out of the country and the publication reports they were unable to obtain any comment from him. Limpopo Artist Movement chairperson Mphoza Mashabela, who attended the memorial service told the publication that Shabangu indeed make the comments and revealed that he is saddened by the revelations. “Yes, I can confirm that Veli mentioned that Cassper Nyovest did not pay royalties to our legends and did not even pass a message of condolences to the bereaved family and the remaining members of the group. It’s very sad indeed.

“And as Limpopo Artist Movement, I just wanted to say we are with Mbadu’s family and the remaining members of the group and we will give them our support whenever they need it,” he told Sunday World.
