SA Rappers React To Tyla’s Historic Grammy Award Win
SA Rappers React To Tyla’s Historic Grammy Award Win. South Africa’s music scene erupted in celebration on Sunday 4 February 2024 as local Amapiano sensation Tyla was announced as the winner of the coveted “Best African Music Performance” at the 66th Grammy Awards.
The 22-year-old artist clinched her first-ever music award for her acclaimed afro piano and R&B track, “Water,” which attained widespread acclaim and numerous accomplishments on the global stage. Tyla received her award during the premiere ceremony of the 66th Annual Grammy Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
It was not a one-way race for Tyla, but she faced competition from reputable African music giants with the likes of Nigeria’s Burna Boy, Asake & Olamide, Ayra Starr, and Davido. Tyla has not only made herself proud by winning the coveted award at a very young age, rather the whole of Mzansi has expressed their pride as the young artist raised the South African flag high on a global scale.
Even though we are yet to witness an SA rapper walk away with a Grammy Award in this lifetime, SA Hip Hop artists also joined the country in celebrating Tyla’s massive win. Taking to Twitter (X), L-Tido praised the Water hitmaker for representing South Africa and acknowledging her roots. “You gotta love Tyla she always reppin South Africa to the fullest. A Grammy award winner with no album!” L-Tido said in a post.
Moozlie, The Big Hash, and Cassper Nyovest joined in with congratulatory messages, expressing their pride for Tyla and commending her for bringing honour to South Africa.
Boity had the honor of witnessing Tyla receive her award, as she was among the attendees at the event in LA. The renowned rapper posted a picture of herself and Tyla on the event’s red carpet on Instagram, expressing her excitement and words of support for the emerging artist. “South Africa does it once again!! 😍🔥🇿🇦 To the most deserving Queen! Congratulations @tyla…this is only the beginning!” Wrote Boity.
