AKA had a twitter Q & A with his fans in which he gives Jonny Joburg and Nonhle Thema the middle finger! Speaks about about his greatest life achievements, what sets him apart from SA rappers, How much he charges for features, favorite song off Levels, favorite SA up and coming rappers at the moment, dream collaborations, and more! Check the interview below:
How much do you charge for a feature
Funny enough. I don’t charge for features. I think I’ve charged once or twice in my whole career.
If you had a chance to work with one African music legend who would it be and why?
It would have to be uhm …. Salif Keita maybe … If I can’t get him, my homie from Uhuru is the next best thing
What inspires AKA as an artist or performer?
I’m inspired by real life. The opportunity to continually improve my craft, while getting paid to do what I love
What’s your fav song on levels
Tough one. All my own songs are special to me. I’d have to go with KONTROL
Have you ever ghost wrote a popular rapper anywhere in the world and if yes name drop
I haven’t really had the opportunity to “ghost write” for anybody but I’ve “co written” some raps
What keeps you going amidst all the hate you get?
I just make sure that I focus on the positives, like my fans and the blessings that keep coming my way.
Should we expect a new album soon maybe?
I’m looking forward to starting work on the next album. Dropping new music sooner than you think
If you could work with any artist dead or alive who would that be?
It would have to be …. Uhm … Michael Jackson obviously
Who was your fav artist that you worked with on levels?
Everyone really brought a unique flavor to the album but I must say … I always learn when I work with KO.
Will you ever start your own record label?
I think I’m more interested in nurturing and working with new talent than actually “signing” anyone. Maybe one day.
If you can inspire someone pursuing music what advice would you give them?
The best advice is that hard work trumps talent 90% of the time. Also, self belief will get you very very far.
Fav rapper of all time
AKA
What do you think about Nonhle Thema dissin errbody excited about going to the BETs
I don’t … Think about her.
Would you do a feature with a young artist who isn’t famous yet?
It’s not about whether you’re known or not. It’s about whether you’re dope or not.
What sets you apart from any other SA Hip Hop Artist
I think I’ve managed to sustain and build a big fan base because of my consistency and my honesty … To myself.
How long have you been in the music Industry
I wrote my 1st rap and made my 1st beat … In 2002. Does that count?
Top 5 SA Rappers
1) AKA 2) AKA 3) AKA 4) AKA 5) AKA …
Will you do a song with Reason
I’ve done a song with him on my album and more. In fact I owe him a verse right now … He might be mad at me
Do you have any interest towards ODD Future . If yes who is your fav
Absolutely ZERO interest.
Secrets On Stayign On Top Of The Game
Not really any secrets. Hard work. Good team. Passion. Ambition.
Whats your fav tv show or series
I’m not really a series person. I do PVR every episode of VICE and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
Was there ever a time you wanted to give up and if so what kept you going?
Maybe I had moments when it was tough but I’m not a quitter. My self belief always carried me. Never considered it.
Your biggest achievement
Probably my 2 BEST MALE SAMAS … That or my daughter.
Will you be perfoming with a band
Strange question. Right now I’m probably the only SA rap artist performing with a band …. Week in week out.
Upcoming rappers you looking at, at the moment
Yanga. Kid X …
What do you think of Johnny Joburg would you collaborate with him?
Not a fucking chance mate.
Did you have stage fright when you started how did you overcome it?
Never been the stage fright type. I just get really excited, really hyped. The part I hate is waiting to get on.
