Up Close And Personal With Ginger Breadman

Gringer Breadman is one of those artists you listen to and realise that South African Hip Hop will one day be as celebrated as Hip Hop from the States world wide. The young rappers is definitely a superb technical writer and his pen game is undoubtedly in a league of its own.  We got a chance to sit down with the man himself and here is hot it went:

Ginger Trill

How would you best describe yourself?

I’m a lover of music man,I am art – I take my craft serious and I’m one of those people that are lucky to be doing what I love for a living and meeting and collaborating with my idols

Why Ginger Breadman? Where did the name come from?

lol I answer this question way more than I intended to when I came up with it,and funny enough that’s exactly why I came up with it!you know what?when the album drops I will explain it all.

Where did you grow up and what was your childhood like?

I grew in North-west,a township in a small city ( yes I said city,Potchefstroom is a CITY lol ) called Ikageng and my childhood was  amazing – my grandma raised me,I was spoilt, then my parents got married when I was bout 5,I moved in with them, those two are amazing,so my child hood was fantastic – they provided everything, looking back now 20 something years later,I wonder how they did all that

What music did you listen to growing up?

Ahhhh man,RnB and Ballads fam … All day, just thinking back on it gets me so nostalgic, look there was a bit of rap too somewhere in the background but for the most part the soundtrack to my younger days was that 90’s RnB infused with sleek hip-hop … E.G Mona Lisa ft. Mr.Cheeks “can you tell me what’s going on/in your mind/is it affection you need/is it love you wanna find” lol

How and when did you get into music?

Well I’m not sure what you mean but I have always been into music, since I was 5,but if you mean when I picked a pen?between 13 and 14 somewhere there,I remember these guys ( who actually my friends now ) stepped to me like “yo wanna battle??” Before I could reply “no” somebody was already beat-boxin and it was on I was never ready !! But I just copied what the other guy did using my own words, off the top, they was impressed,to be honest I did not get why at the time lol – but from that day on,I had clout – I couldn’t let the streets down.

Was there an artist or song in particular that got you into rap?

Into rap music ?? Prolly ( and this the weird thing ) a Faith Evans song,ft. P-Diddy,that song means everything to me yo lol maybe even that Black Rob joint “whoah”

Where did you draw the inspiration for School Of The Hard Knocks from?

The beat just led me there man, those sentiments came spilling out cause for real for real?that’s how proud I am of some the people that I been knowing since we was knee-high,I’ve seen cats come from low-income house-holds being told they wasn’t gone’ amount to shit when they get older by society and the just the lack of prospects in our hood, and then niggaz came up !!!! That shit is inspiring to witness

What has the reception of the product been like so far?

Better than the previous solo effort, you know what I love about #TrillGang ?? These people really really ride for me man,all my life as a musician that’s all I really asked for,a group of people who identify with my music and ride hard-body for the kid,we prolly like 30 to 40 K strong so I’m outchea feeling like with them I need nothing more, nobody else !! My support fam base ( I don’t like using the word “fan” to describe the people who support me but you get what I mean ) is loyal A/F

How do you prepare for your shows, do you have certain rituals you perform before?

Not really – not at all actually,me and DJ Yanga prep a set,I say a prayer before I hit the stage and we on!everybody does that though

Knowing that the radio plays a lot of dumbed-down music, what drives you to stay true to hip hop and lyricism?

I don’t know any better lol that’s my freaking problem

How did the Amantombazana remix feature come about?

I had close ties to Motif at the time and Riky was signed so T asked me to hop on,I spoke to Riky who at the time shared the sentiments, and boom

When can we expect an album from Ginger Breadman?

I just dropped a full body of work on this mixtape #MoBetter so … That should hold ya’ll of for a while no ?? Lol

Do you think beef is good for Hip Hop? Why?

I don’t think people disliking each other as generally a good thing lol but for hip-hop it sure makes for some entertaining news – AKA dropped #Composure the whole game stood still, even last year Cass dropped #Beef and damn near broke the net lol so I guess people are into that kinda thing,I don’t know

What’s your take on the current state of S.A Hip Hop?

It’s working,Brands and cooperates are buying in so of course that means a whole lot more sustainability for the artists – we can now live off this rap-shit!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

lol owning a record label, touring countries – such things, only God knows.

What do you do for fun?

Attend gigs lol,or rap and create music ( boring I know lol )
