Rashid Kay Weighs In On Cassper And Riky Rick Only Being Identified As “Friends Of Amapiano”

Rashid Kay Weighs In On Cassper And Riky Rick Only Being Identified As “Friends Of Amapiano”. At the weekend the first-ever Amapiano awards were held and one of SA Hip Hop’s very own walked away with an award. Former friends Cassper Nyovest and Riky Rick were both nominated in the Friends of Amapiano category. The Boss Zonke hitmaker managed to beat the competition that included DJs Vetkuk vs Mahoota, Oskido and award-winning group MI Casa. Ricky’s win certainly got the streets talking and even SA Hip Hop commentator and radio personality Rashid Kay weighed in on the Hip Hop act winning the “best friend” award.

Rashid questioned what does it take to become fully involved in the Amapiano genre and not be just a friend to the popular genre. Riky in recent times has shown himself to be quite the ally of the genre, he has been spotted hanging out with the hitmakers of the genre. He also recently went out of the country to support Major League DJs in Amsterdam, he also posted a video of himself dancing with DJ Waffles, who went viral after he video trended on social media. Riky has certainly proved that he is a friend of Amapiano.

Rashid also pointed out the fact that Riky won the award despite not having an Amapiano album. Cassper on the other hand has released several Amapiano songs but did not get the coveted award. “The “best friend” (winner) is the one without a Yanos album. Do you get the message?” remarked Rashid. The SA Hip Hop commenter also remarked that maybe Riky winning was a sign from the genre to say that “You’re a good friend as long as you’re not doing our shit”. This is maybe why Cassper and Vetkuk vs Mahoota were friends zoned. One tweep even suggested that Cassper should have taken the award, especially since his Amapiano album, Sweet and Short performed well. His track Siyathanda has over 10 million views on YouTube and streamed over 3 million times on Spotify.

One tweep weighed in and seemed to agree with Rashid’s point, the tweep remarked that the category was certainly confusing. The tweep wonder, if the category would also work for Hip Hop. “this is the most confusing category in the history of awards. imagine busiswa or Lady du winning the friends of hip hop category at the South African hip hop awards,” shared the Twitter user. Rashid is instrumental in the organisation of the SA Hip Hop awards and he seemed to think, a “Friends of Hip Hop” category might not be an entirely bad idea.
