Rashid Kay Shares Why Burna Boy’s “Last Last” Didn’t Win A Grammy Over Zakes Bantwini

Following Burna Boy’s album success Love, Damini, ‘Last Last’ was one of the songs that attracted many people. It came as a surprise to many that the track did not manage to win a Grammy Award as it missed out to South Africa’s Zake Batwini for the Best Global Music performance.

Social media has been awash with massive outcries after Burna Boy missed out as people were anticipating that Last Last will go on a smooth-sailing win over Mzansi’s Zakes Batwini. “Half of South Africans didn’t even know that Zakes Bantwini. They robbed Burn Boy! Let’s be honest,” read one of the tweets.

Rashid Kay, who knows how music awards are won because of his involvement in the SA Hip Hop Awards, reacted to the aforementioned tweet. He explained why Burna Boy was passed up for Zakes. The rapper stated that when South Africa’s Black Mambazo won a Grammy the previous year, few people were aware of the song.

The other years when Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Soweto Gospel Choir won the Grammys, did you know the songs?” Tweeted Rashid.

The rapper further went on to give a clear explanation of why Burna Boy is not winning the award stating that the prize is not won by having a song that most people are singing along to but it’s about meeting the criteria. “The category is “Global Music Performance” not the “Best Song” or the song people sang along the most,” Rashid explained.

Rashid also said revealed that the other reason why Burna Boy missed out is that Last Last is a sample with Bayethe being an original composition. “That’s not the criteria, Last Last is a whole sample while Bayethe is an original composition.” Tweeted Rashid.
