5 SA Rappers Who Have Their Own Record Labels. Defying the odds in SA Hip Hop takes a whole lot of courage to take charge of the game yourself. Several rappers in the game right now let go of their big record labels to take the risk and take on the hip-hop game all by themselves. Here is a list five of rappers who took the leap of faith and started their own record labels.
Emtee – Emtee Records
After leaving Ambitious Entertainment in 2019, the Wave rapper went on to launch his own record label Emtee records. Under his own label, Emtee has already released a few songs being Wave, Talk to You, Johustleburg and a single that is soon to drop iThemba. The rapper has also signed Lolli Native and Flash Kumkai.
Makwa – Mzonkonko Records
Producer turned rapper Makwa started his own record label Mzonkonko Records at the start of 2021 after ditching Kwesta’s RapLyf Records. Makwa is yet to drop music from the record label but teased behind-the-scenes photos from a music video shoot on his Instagram page. Expect something new from him soon!
The Big Hash – Devo Entity
After leaving innanetwav, The Big Hash became a young CEO and started up his own record label. Currently he is the only artist signed but has already achieved success through his single Peace of Mind released at the start of 2021.
Cassper Nyovest – Family Tree Records
Cassper launched Family Tree Records in 2014 that has a distribution with Universal Music Group South Africa. Cassper has released all his albums under Family Tree Records. The rapper also signed Nadia Nakai and her two albums have been released under the label too.
Kwesta – RapLyf Records
RapLyf Records was launched in 2018 by Kwesta and co-founded by Kid X which both rappers are signed under. Besides the two of them, TLT is also signed to the label. Kwesta had previously mentioned that he does not want to sign too many artists is because he wants to keep the company small.
