Touchline Sends Strong Message After Nota Dismisses His Chances Of Mainstream Success

Touchline Sends Strong Message After Nota Dismisses His Chances Of Mainstream Success. South African rapper Touchline has seemingly responded to controversial music executive and commentator Nota Baloyi after the latter questioned his ability to achieve mainstream success during a recent appearance on Music Pulse.

During the podcast discussion, Nota made blunt remarks about Touchline’s career, arguing that the lyricist cannot create commercially successful records.
“Touchline will never blow up. Touchline just doesn’t have the gift of making hit music,” Nota said. “He doesn’t have a hit song. In his career, he doesn’t have his ‘Roll Up’ like Emtee. In his career, he doesn’t have his ‘Mgani’ like A-Reece.”
The comments quickly sparked debate among hip-hop fans, with some agreeing that chart success remains a challenge for Touchline despite his respected lyrical ability, while others defended the rapper’s contribution to South African hip-hop.
Less than a day after the podcast clip began circulating, Touchline appeared to address the criticism through a message shared on social media.
The rapper posted a bold statement emphasising self-belief and independence, suggesting that outside opinions have no power over his journey or ambitions.
“Do you realise that there’s just nobody in this life that can discourage me from doing anything or becoming anything? Nobody has authority over my decisions, nobody can put a timer or a limit on me. I’m who I want to be, and I’ll be that when I want to be. I’m not even kidding.”

The exchange highlights a long-running conversation within South African hip-hop about the difference between lyrical acclaim and commercial success. Although Touchline is widely respected for his storytelling, technical skill, and consistency, critics often point to the absence of a major crossover hit when comparing him to artists such as Emtee and A-Reece.
For his supporters, however, success cannot be measured solely by chart-topping singles. They argue that Touchline has built a loyal fan base and carved out his own lane in the industry without compromising his artistic identity.
