DJ Audiomarc Shares Why SA Hip Hop Events Are A Waste Of Time. South African hip-hop is currently navigating a tumultuous phase, struggling to reclaim its position as the leading genre in the country’s music scene. However, despite numerous strategies to sustain the rap game in South Africa, DJ Audiomarc emphasized that hosting hip-hop events isn’t viable. Taking X, the renowned DJ highlighted that many South African hip-hop fans do not spend money at events, posing a challenge for promoters aiming to maintain sustainability.

“It’s honestly a waste of time to do a Hiphop event in SA at the moment.. people want free entrance and they still don’t wanna spend when they enter the venue. Also, beers at the bar don’t make up for the money spent to organise the event,” he wrote.

These sentiments are not new within the hip-hop community. Veteran rapper and media personality Rashid Kay has previously echoed similar concerns about South African hip-hop fans’ reluctance to spend money at events.

“I used to do the Masterclass sessions every Sunday now I do them once a month because promoters and club owners are complaining,” he said.

“Somebody said to me you know you have five hundred people here, on Friday I had one hundred people but I made more money with a hundred amapiano people your five hundred people (SA Hip Hop fans) dont buy. I can fill up the venue and think the event was successful but they dont spend at the bar. That has always been the case with Hip Hop always attracting broke people. Hip hop is allergic to spending.”
