Grammy-winning South African artist Zakes Bantwini has added his voice to the growing support for Emtee, publicly offering prayers for the rapper and his independent label as the legal situation surrounding the star continues to unfold.
Bantwini shared the message on X on Tuesday morning, directing his words towards Emtee Records: “My prayers are with you @emteerecords today 🙏🏿 #freeemtee.”
The brief message has since drawn attention as fans and fellow industry figures continue to rally behind Mthembeni “Emtee” Ndevu. The “Roll Up” hitmaker has remained in custody at Johannesburg Correctional Services, popularly known as Sun City, since his bail was revoked at the Midrand Magistrate’s Court in August.
Emtee was initially granted R1,000 bail in June following allegations that he breached a protection order obtained in 2023 by his estranged wife, Nicole Kendall Chinsamy. The order reportedly prohibited him from contacting her or speaking about her on social media. Authorities later alleged that he breached the conditions by sending WhatsApp messages, resulting in his return to custody.
The rapper’s legal troubles have unfolded against the backdrop of intense family tensions, with disputes involving his parents and his current partner, singer Nandi Ndathane, also making headlines. A roadside confrontation over Emtee’s personal belongings further brought the family situation into the public eye.
Bantwini’s latest show of support is particularly notable given his longstanding admiration for Emtee and his music. During Emtee’s highly publicised departure from Ambitiouz Entertainment, Bantwini was among the industry figures who expressed support for the rapper. He previously revealed that he had considered signing Emtee after hearing his breakout hit “Roll Up.”
In 2020, Bantwini also called on South Africans to “protect Emtee at all costs,” while praising the rapper as a respectful and humble young artist with exceptional music.
His latest message suggests that his support has not wavered, with the veteran musician once again placing Emtee and his team in his prayers as the rapper faces a difficult period in his personal and professional life.
Emtee became a major force in South African hip hop following the success of his platinum-certified debut album Avery in 2015. After leaving Ambitiouz Entertainment, he established Emtee Records and continued building his independent career with projects such as Logan in 2021 and DIY 3 in 2024.
