With a significant presence in the South African music scene, Coco Brown has highlighted the challenges faced by DJs in the industry and has called for collective action to address them. In a passionate thread, the renowned DJ highlighted the pressures that come with being a DJ in South Africa’s Hip-Hop culture. She expressed disappointment over the lack of support from promoters in amplifying the cultural movement.

“The pressure that comes with being the only hip hop DJ at a venue is one that you can never comprehend until you’re in that position. You have to make everyone happy in that one hour and that can never be enough,” she said.

In a follow-up post, the Cameras chanter pointed fingers at promoters for their failure to back South African Hip-Hop DJs, resulting in subpar music choices at many clubs. She stressed that the absence of new SA Hip-Hop tracks in rotation is a direct consequence of this lack of support.

“I completely blame promoters for not booking enough hip hop DJs. You determine what genre moves at groove and you instead choose to book what people are already consuming so much of,” Coco Brown added.

The famed DJ’s comments followed a widespread backlash against South African Hip-Hop DJs, sparked by Dj Kagiso’s decision to spin old hip-hop tracks at Konka during US rapper Gunna’s visit to Soweto.
