DJ Sabby: “The Gate Keeping Thing Won’t Die Anytime Soon Cause Dudes Bring Their Emotions Into Business”. Radio DJ and TV personality DJ Sabby has been on radio for over 10 years and has a great insight into the South African music industry. Having worked for YFM and now working for Metro FM, he always very eye opening things to say about the industry.

The popular radio DJ was the latest guest on the POPcast hosted by Ms Cosmo and Scoop Makhathini. The three got into topics about Uncle Vinny’s influence on music culture, the importance of African collaborations and gate keeping in the industry.

With reference to gate keeping specifically and explaining why and how it happens. They also got into how it affects upcoming rappers in the Hip Hop industry. DJ Sabby mentioned that he feels that gatekeeping will be around for a while because of how people bring their emotions into their business.

I think the gate keeping thing is not going to die anytime soon cause dudes bring their emotions into business you know, just to bring another industry we hear it a lot in the acting community how people are black balled. They’ll say Yo’ Scoop did this to so and so, f*ck Scoop. You come for castings, they don’t even record when you do an audition.” He said.

Gate Keeping is so real in the industry and it’s people who have personal vendettas against you. Hence I always say just be nice to everyone man because the kid you’re mean to today when they’re trying to get your attention, fast forward three years from now they could be the ones signing your cheque.

DJ Sabby also used Emtee as a prime example.

When you look at Emtee for example guys. Emtee, every time he gets to another level something happens. Like Logan reached number one on the charts, its doing some amazing stuff all of a sudden he lost his Instagram account. How? We don’t have to put any names to it but there’s always another hand at play. Emtee will get to a totally different level, this thing pops up or a scandal breaks out.” He explained.
